Raising awareness for Alzheimer's Disease...
Mrs Suffolk Atlantic 2021/22, Natasha Streatfield has launched her 'I Am Me' campaign.
“ I AM ME is words I have used from the word Alzheimer’s, To remember that anyone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is still the same person before their diagnosis.” Natasha
About I Am Me
The 'I Am Me' campaign has been created to raise awareness for Alzheimer's Disease and to remind everyone that anyone diagnosed with the terrible disease deserves to be treated the same as before.
Although they may be changing to you, they are still the same person that still enjoys the same things and talking about their life and experiences.
Please remember to be patient with your suffering loved ones and support and comfort them wherever your can.
About Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's is a type of brain disorder that causes problems with memory, behaviour and thinking. It was named after Alois Alzheimer who was the first doctor to describe the disease.
This disease is progressive and over time causes damage to more parts of the brain and produces more symptoms as it continues to worsen.
Alzheimer's is the most common cause of Dementia and currently over 520,000 people in the UK suffer from Dementia that has been caused by Alzheimer's and that number is set to rise.
Currently there is no way to cure most types of Dementia and are only ways to slow the progression and to relieve some of the symptoms.
My Experience
When I heard about Tash's campaign I knew I had to get involved. I reached out to find out more about her experience and to share my own story.
Sadly, I recently lost my grandfather and he was suffering from Dementia so I unfortunately got to see first-hand how it was affecting him and our family. Seeing him get frustrated to remember simple things and carry out day-to-day tasks was heart-breaking.
We have to remember that people suffering with any brain/memory disorder are still the same person. Remind your loved ones of the amazing achievements they've gained throughout their life, get them to share their favourite memories and most importantly, never forget to tell them how much you love them!
